How to find the fastest route during peak hours

Navigation apps calculate the best road for the traffic they can see right now. During peak hours that picture ages within minutes: a queue builds behind an incident, the motorway drops to walking pace, and the route you were given ten minutes ago is no longer the fastest one. Directions keep recalculating around you, but they never ask the more useful question — is driving now the right call at all?

Compare the free-flow travel time with the live travel time. A five-minute gap is normal friction. A twenty-minute gap means the network around you is saturated and a different road is unlikely to rescue the trip on its own.

Red on the map can mean commuter volume, roadworks, or a full closure. Volume clears gradually and rewards patience; a closure does not clear and rewards leaving the corridor early, at the exit before the queue rather than the one inside it.

A detour is only faster if it is open, legal for your vehicle, and not already absorbing everyone else's detour. Check height, weight and towing limits on smaller roads, and treat any alternative that saves under five minutes as noise.

On the worst corridors, waiting fifteen minutes routinely beats every available detour. Departure time is a lever most navigation apps never offer you.
