Yes, the core route decision is free. You can enter a destination, run an analysis, and get advice without paying. Some advanced features may be added later, but the basic 'should I leave now?' answer will stay free.

ExitMe works across Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. We read traffic and weather data from national sources where available: the Netherlands (NDW), Belgium (TOM), France (Bison Futé), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Nordic countries, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Balkans and the Baltic states, plus weather warnings from the National Weather Service (US), Environment Canada and MetService (NZ), and live incidents from 511 Ontario/Alberta and Live Traffic NSW (Australia).

What do LEAVE, WAIT, TURN_BACK, and SEARCH_SAFE_STOP mean?

LEAVE means the route is good enough right now: go. WAIT means conditions are bad but expected to improve soon, so staying put is safer. TURN_BACK means continuing would cost you much more time or risk; returning or cancelling is better. SEARCH_SAFE_STOP means you should find the nearest safe parking area, for example during a heavy storm or a blocked road.

How does ExitMe decide what I should do?

We first calculate the current route, alternative routes, and any delays. Then we collect real-time incidents, weather warnings, and winter-equipment rules. We combine Google Maps route data, official traffic feeds (NDW, TOM, Bison Futé, etc.), national weather warnings, and driver reports from the ExitMe community. Each source is weighted by reliability and recency, and we always show which sources influenced the advice.

What should I set in my vehicle profile?

Accepted Answer

Your vehicle profile tells us what you drive: car, van, camper, truck, motorcycle, or electric vehicle. It also records whether you have winter tyres or snow chains, and whether we should check low-emission zones. The more accurate the profile, the more reliable the advice.

What is the winter-equipment check?

Accepted Answer

Many countries require winter tyres or snow chains in set months or when roads are snowy or icy. ExitMe checks the rules for every country on your route and warns you if your vehicle is not equipped for the law or the weather. Always follow local signs, because road conditions can change quickly.

What are low-emission zones and how does ExitMe check them?

Low-emission zones (LEZ, Umweltzonen, ZTL, etc.) restrict certain vehicles in city centres. ExitMe warns you if your route enters a zone that your vehicle may not be allowed to enter, based on your vehicle type and emission class. You are still responsible for the correct registration or sticker.

Do you store my location or routes?

How do driver reports work?

After you receive advice, you can report what you see on the road. Your report is matched to the exact road segment and combined with other reports to build Route DNA: a live picture of how a route behaves. This improves advice for everyone without revealing your identity.

Route DNA is a reliability score for every road segment. It combines historical traffic patterns, weather, incidents, and community reports to predict whether a route is likely to stay clear or get worse. The more drivers report, the sharper the predictions become.
